See the ‘Big Mouth’ Cast Side-by-Side with the Awkward Animated Teenagers They Voice

The Big Mouth cast has brought life to the show’s ragtag group of teens for almost a decade.
Created by Jennifer Flackett, Mark Levin, Andrew Goldberg and Nick Kroll, the Netflix animated series follows a group of young teenagers at Bridgeton Middle School as they navigate the highs and, more often, lows of puberty. The comedy is based on Goldberg and Kroll’s own experiences growing up together and is one of Netflix’s longest-running original series ever, with a total of eight seasons.
“We strive to have a very inclusive work environment and tell stories that are nuanced about all different groups of people’s experiences,” Kroll told The Independent in October 2021.
“Hopefully we’re telling stories that everyone involved in the show can be really psyched and proud of,” he continued.
As the show bids its final farewell with season 8, here’s a look at the Big Mouth cast side-by-side with the hilariously awkward teenagers they play.

Kroll is the voice behind a legion of fan-favorite characters on Big Mouth — 79 in total, in fact.
While the comedian predominantly voices one of the show’s main characters, Nick Birch, he also is the voice behind other series regulars like Maury the Hormone Monster, Coach Steve, Lola Skumpy and Rick the Hormone Monster.
Kroll explained in a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he often steps in to voice random side characters as well.
“When you create a show, it’s always like, ‘Alright, can you just pop [in] to and do, you know, do a … surfing tampon?’ And you’re like, ‘Yeah … I can do that,’ ” Kroll told The Hollywood Reporter. “So there’s this massive amount of voices that I’ve popped in to do, and then there’s the main cast voices that I do, which proportionally is very high for the show.”
Though the characters have mainly remained young adults throughout the show’s eight-season run, they are finally growing up — and Kroll is excited to guide them along that journey.
“The beauty of telling stories about kids who are evolving is that it never gets tired, and you’re always finding new elements, new stories to tell and new emotions for those kids … because the show itself does not stand still, it makes it more gratifying to perform,” he said.

Comedian John Mulaney voices the always-awkward Andrew Glouberman.
Nick’s best friend, Andrew, leans on the shier, nerdier side and is navigating puberty while dealing with his less-than-approving parents and approving-in-all-the-wrong-ways hormone monster, Maury. Mulaney also voices some side characters on Big Mouth, like Mint in season 1.
Beyond Big Mouth, Mulaney’s voice acting credits also include Peter Porker (or Spider-Ham) in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , Chip in 2022’s Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers and Big Jack Horner in 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

A friend of Nick and Andrew’s, Jessi Glaser is a witty, steadfast teenager voiced by actress Jessi Klein.
Throughout Big Mouth, Jessi is often used as a vehicle to navigate heavier topics like familial divorce, finding your sexuality and mental health.
Though Jessi has been at the center of some of Big Mouth’s more serious storylines, like season 2’s finale episode that saw her navigate depression, she still joins in on the show’s craziness and is never not ready with a quick quip.
In a 2018 interview with Uproxx, Klein reflected on the impact Big Mouth has had on families, particularly those looking for an “entry point” to discussing puberty with their kids.
“The number of people, strangers, who gush about this show to me, but specifically tell me that they’re watching it with their kids, is remarkable,” she said. “That they’re watching it with their 12-year-old or 13-year-old or upward.”
“I think it’s really useful to have something funny that can make everybody laugh, and that’s [also] the entry point for everyone into topics that can be really difficult,” Klein continued. “I think any time you can lighten them up, as the way in for people, it helps the conversation.”
Klein’s voice work also includes Judy from the 2021 film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.

Missy, the nerdy and awkward affliction of Andrew’s heart, has been dually voiced by Jenny Slate and Ayo Edebiri throughout Big Mouth’s run.
In 2020, Slate, who had voiced Missy for the show’s first four seasons, announced on Instagram that she would be stepping down from the role.
“At the start of the show, I reasoned with myself that it was permissible for me to play ‘Missy’ because her mom is Jewish and White — as am I,” Slate wrote at the time. “But ‘Missy’ is also Black, and Black characters on an animated show should be played by Black actors.”
Edebiri was then cast to play Missy for Big Mouth’s next four seasons, and even voiced her for some episodes in season 4.
Jason Mantzoukas as Jay Bilzerian

Jason Mantzoukas not only shocks but also entertains as Jay Bilzerian on Big Mouth, a zany friend of Nick and Andrew’s who’s a little too obsessed with magic and explores his sexuality to extreme heights throughout the show.
“Jay is kind of this unbridled id — a feral child,” Mantzoukas said of his character in a 2021 interview with The New Yorker. “What I love is that the show is constantly engaging with his emotions as an engine to drive him forward.”
“His dynamic with Lola is hilarious, but it’s driven by this profound sense of loss and loneliness and all of the emotional stuff that I feel is so paramount in portraying these characters,” the comedian continued, reflecting on Jay’s fraught relationship with his family on Big Mouth.
“Even when we’re saying and doing preposterous things, it’s important to play them with a degree of nuance and empathy.”
Mantzoukas also voices Jay’s father, Guy Bilzerian, on Big Mouth.
Maya Rudolph as Connie

The hilarious Maya Rudolph voices the equally hilarious Connie the Hormone Monstress in Big Mouth.
Throughout the show, Connie serves as Jessi, Nick and sometimes Missy’s mentor through puberty, and is also a key character in Big Mouth’s spinoff, Human Resources. Rudolph has nabbed a total of four Emmy awards for voicing Connie.
“I’m really proud to be a part of this show,” Rudolph said when accepting her fourth award at the 2024 Emmys. “[It] really humanizes being human. I feel like I got on the right side of history getting to be a part of this special show.”
The comedian voices some other characters on Big Mouth, like Nick’s mom Diane, and has voiced roles in animated films like Shrek the Third and Pixar’s Luca.
Fred Armisen as Elliot Birch

Fred Armisen voices Nick’s overly-doting father, Elliot Birch, on Big Mouth.
Throughout the show, Elliot is often caught telling his kids wildly inappropriate stories in an effort to get closer to them and inspire them to open up.
Armisen also voices some side characters on the show like Bob the Hormone Monster in season 2.
Jordan Peele as Duke Ellington

Some might be surprised to learn that acclaimed director Jordan Peele is the voice behind the Ghost of Duke Ellington on Big Mouth.
The jazz musician’s spirit lurks around in Nick’s attic and often gives him advice on love and everything in between. Peele also voices Jay’s dog, Featuring Ludacris, as well as Missy’s father, Cyrus Foreman-Greenwald. He also voiced the ghost of Freddie Mercury in Big Mouth’s first and third seasons.
Peele, the director of Get Out, Us and Nope, is evidently no stranger to comedy or voice acting and has had previous voice roles in films like Storks and Toy Story 4.
