Ryan Dorsey is helping his son grieve his mother.

Almost five years after Naya Rivera‘s death, her ex-husband is still trying to relieve their son Josey, 9, of the guilt he carries from the day the Glee star drowned during a mother-son boat outing.

As Ryan explained, Josey—who was just 4 years old at the time—feels as if he didn’t do enough to try and save her.

“Something he’s said over and over is that he was trying to find a life raft, and there was a rope, but there was a big spider on the rope, and he was too scared to throw it,” Ryan told People in an interview published Feb. 12. “I keep reassuring him, ‘Buddy, that rope wasn’t going to be long enough.’ That obviously still sticks out in his head because he feels like he could have saved her.”

As the Ray Donovan actor noted, there was likely nothing that the young boy could’ve realistically done in the moment, which he called “a freak occurrence.”

“I think she just got caught up in a brush,” he speculated. “That or a weird undercurrent from the dam.”
