Michael Shannon, Jason Narducy & Friends‘ tour celebrating R.E.M.‘s Fables of the Reconstruction hit NYC on Saturday for a show at Brooklyn Steel. Many of the stops on this tour have featured actual R.E.M. members joining the band (which includes Bob Mould/Mountain Goats drummer Jon Wurster), and this was no exception. We didn’t get a full reunion like Athens, GA did, but frontman Michael Stipe came out to sing on “Pretty Persuasion” which closed out the night. You can watch video of that below.

That was a great end to what was a marathon night of R.E.M. classics. The band opened with Fables of the Reconstruction in full followed by a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Femme Fatale.” They then took a break before coming back out for another 23 songs, including lots of classics (“Radio Free Europe,” “Harborcoat,” “7 Chinese Brothers,” “So. Central Rain,” “Cuyahoga,” “Gardening at Night”) not to mention a few covers that Berry, Buck, Mills, and Stipe were known to do back in the day, including Wire’s “Strange” (which ended up on Document) and Aerosmith’s “Toys in the Attic,” where they brought out opener Dave Hill to shred.

Check out photos by Stephanie F. Black of the whole night, plus more video and the Brooklyn Steel setlist below.
