Petro Gazz didn’t even have two weeks to celebrate its PVL All-Filipino Conference title romp, with the Angels now contending for more than a club championship in a league that’s certainly a lot tougher.
“Past is the past. It’s a different stage. This is like a much higher [level] like this is crazy volleyball right now,” Brooke Van Sickle said of the Angels’ stint in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Champions League. “[They are] all champions from Asia, so I’m really glad to have this opportunity.”
Petro Gazz made sure that all three local teams made it past group play after a 25-8, 25-12, 25-12 elimination of Hip Hing of Hong Kong on Tuesday night at PhilSports Arena.

MANILA, Philippines —Dell Palomata displayed her international poise as she delivered her best performance of the tournament against the towering Zhetysu squad of Kazakhstan in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Champions League on Thursday.
While PLDT absorbed a 13-25, 22-25, 20-25 loss to exit in the quarterfinals, Palomata impressed and delivered seven points against the Kazakhs, who have an average height of 5-foot-9.
“Honestly, my mindset was just to fight. The opponents were really tall and strong, so I knew we had no choice — we had to fight back,” Palomata, an Alas Pilipinas mainstay, told reporters in Filipino.

In a field filled with much taller and athletic squads armed with different playing styles and a lot more experience, PLDT knew that it was an uphill battle in the AVC Women’s Champions League.
And the High Speed Hitters couldn’t scale what looks to be the highest peak in the tournament, bowing out of contention after losing in straight sets to Zhetysu VC of Kazakhstan, 25-13, 25-22, 25-20, in the quarterfinals on Thursday at PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
“In general, the other teams are just on a higher level,” coach Rald Ricafort said in Filipino after his crew gave its all but still fell way short against the talented Kazakhs.
