Kim Deal and her big band charmed at wonderful Bowery Ballroom show (review, setlist, video)

Kim Deal is the coolest. All smiles, she led a 10-piece band including strings, horns and backup singers (her sister Kelley and Lung’s Kate Wakefield) as they played her solo debut, Nobody Loves You More, front-to-back to an absolutely packed, adoring Bowery Ballroom crowd. When those strings and horns kicked in during the album’s title track, first song of the album and night, the whole place erupted.
This was the first show of the tour with guitarist (and Phoebe Bridgers collaborator) Harrison Whitford, who’s subbing for Rob Bochnik in NYC, Philly and DC, and the horn section, but everyone sounded fantastic as they played the album, from pretty songs like “Are You Mine” and “Which I Was,” to post-punk bangers “Crystal Breath” and “Big Ben Beat,” and the lush, swooning “Summerland.” The more rocking songs are fun, but Kim’s weathered, breathy croon sounded especially great on the dreamier material.
That was it for the horns for the night, but violinist Susan Voelz and cellist Alison Chesley came back for the second set, which featured Breeders songs “We’re Gonna Rise” and “Safari” as well as solo songs “Beautiful Moon,” “Walking with a Killer” and “Biker Gone.” They then briefly left the stage and came back for two more Breeders songs: “Off You” and “Do You Love Me Now?” The show was only an hour and change, the crowd definitely wanted more, with many shouts for “Gigantic” among other songs, but it also felt just right.
Check out the full setlist and a few fan-shot videos from the show, along with photos from Kim’s tour kickoff in CT, below.
The merch for this tour is great, with a fun ’80s-metal style t-shirt, and there was an awesome limited edition screen print poster for the Bowery show, too.
Kim plays Brooklyn Paramount tonight (3/13) with Ratboys (who opened at Bowery too, but I missed).
