1. Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande, āRain On Meā
Chromatica // Interscope // 2020Ā Ā
āIād rather be dry, but at least Iām alive / Rain on me, rain, rainā¦ā Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande on the same track? Yaaaasssss! The production (BloodPopĀ®, BURNS, and Tchami) is potent from the start on āRain on Meā, the crowning achievement from Chromatica, where Lady Gaga fully embraces her dance, electro-infused pop roots. Both she and Grande deliver strong, compelling vocals. Gaga asserts herself early on. There are āwater worksā you might say (āI never asked for the rainfall / At least I showed up, you showed me nothing at allā).Ā Grande unleashes high-flying, contrasting vocals on the second verse, extending the āwater worksā and most importantly, being honest from an emotional standpoint. āI can feel it on my skin,ā she sings on the pre-chorus, continuing, āTeardrops on my face / Let it wash away my sins.āĀ Both collaborate throughout the remainder of the record.Ā One of the best moments is the bridge, where the positivity and uplifting vibes are a huge selling point. āRain on Meā is a total bop ā among the best songs of 2020 ā with two awesome artists at the tip-top of their game.Ā

2. Jack Harlow, āLovin On Meā
āLoving on MeāĀ //Ā Generation Now / Atlantic //Ā 2023
Grammy-nominated rapper Jack Harlow keeps āLovin on MeāĀ brief but entertaining. The record is produced by OZ,Ā Nik D, andĀ Sean Momberger. Notably, it features aĀ sampleĀ ofĀ āWhatever (Bass Solique)Ā byĀ Cadillac DaleĀ (1995).Ā This sample appears at the onset, looped throughout the pre-chorus and chorus.Ā Harlow uses it to fuel his lyrical fire, even performing along with the sample in the chorus.Ā āIām vanilla baby (I donāt like no whips and chains, and you canāt tie me down),ā he raps, adding, āIāll choke you, but I aināt no killer baby.ā Ooh-wee! The lyrics are sexual but also show that Jack has his limits. Donāt get it twisted, though.Ā Thereās still some fuckboy ways entrenched in this track.Ā In the first verse, he confidently asserts, āYoung J-A-C-K, aka Rico like Suave, Young Enrique,ā and, in the closing lyric, states, āShe wearinā cheetah print, thatās how bad she wanna be spotted āround your boy.ā Well, damn! In the second verse, he confirms theĀ vanilla-ness, sexually speaking: āYoung M-I-S-S-I-O-N-A-R-Y.ā Beyond his preferred sexual position, give him credit for theĀ ShrekĀ reference: āI keep it short with a bitch, Lord Farquaad.āĀ āLovin on MeāĀ isnāt the second coming of rap by any means. Still, itās fun. Notably, the multiplatinum single topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks.

3. Lana Del Rey, āHenry, come onā
āHenry, come onā // Lana Del Rey / Universal Music Operations Limited // 2025Ā
āAnd itās not because of you / That I turned out so dangerous / Yesterday, I heard God say, āItās in your blood.āā Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey remains ātrue to herselfā (alt-pop) while simultaneously entering into her country music era. āHenry, come onā sounds familiar and ādifferent.ā She co-writes with Grammy winner Luke Laird who is known for country music.Ā Laird and Drew Erickson produced it. Positively, āHenry, come onā is another gorgeous song Del Rey. The music backdrop begins spare, led by guitar accompaniment, but grows more lush as the song expands.Ā The sound palette includes piano, organ, bass, drums, and strings.Ā The vibe is alt-pop, country, and folk. Del Rey shines vocally, delivering her signature indulgent, moody performance.Ā Her tone is sublime.Ā Even as āmoodyā as she might sound at times, Lana blesses our ears with her upper register, which is always a treat. Another pro regarding āHenry, come onā is the songwriting.Ā As always, Lana has a story to tell, and she adds some country sensibilities (āItās last call, āHey, yāallā / Hang his hat up on the wall / Tell him that his cowgirl is goneā). Tried and true, āHenry, come onā is beautiful, though not the most exciting song.Ā While peasant and respectable, this five-minute-plus record does not necessarily move the needle.

4. Kid Souf, āOn Your Faceā
āOn Your Faceā // Kid Souf // 2024Ā
āI wanna touch on my own body ācause my bodyās the goal.ā Damn, thatās a strong statement there, Kid Souf! He makes numerous eyebrow-raising assertions. āSo, blow me while I blow this money right up my noseā references a BJ and drug use š³.Ā He doesnāt stop there, either! āGive you something good tonight / Light you up like camera lights / Down your throat until itās numbā¦ā Size matters! If we are to believe what he implies, he is well-endowed šā¦ Further exploring the outlandish lyrics, Souf adds, āWannaĀ hear you scream / Wanna feel your body shake / Wanna hear you speak in tongues / I donāt wanna know your name / Just give me the word / And Iāll write it on your face.ā Letās unpack that.Ā He enjoys moaning, the āmotion of the bodyā during sex, he doesnāt care about his partnerās name and will willingly ejaculate on his face.Ā Holy fuck! āOn Your Faceā is nothing short of a trip! Kid Souf brings ample attitude, the lyrics are infectious and suggestive, while the musical backdrop, with its dynamic, danceable synths and beat, goes hard.Ā Itās not explicit with curse words, but still, itās not safe for work!

5. Victoria MonĆ©t, āOn My Mamaā
JAGUAR II // Lovett Music, Inc. / RCA // 2023āÆĀ āÆĀ
āPut that on my own mama, on my hood / I look fly, I look good / You canāt touch my bag, wish you could / I look fly, I look too good.ā Victoria MonĆ©t is confident AF onāÆāOn My Mamaā, the very best song from her 2023 debut album,Ā JAGUAR II, PERIOD! Basically, you canāt touch her ā sheās the sugar honey iced tea! On this fab record, she gets a groovy, soulful backdrop fromāÆDeputyāÆandāÆJeff āGittyā Gitelman.⯠Itās not all neo-soul vibes though asāÆChalie BoyāÆbrings the hip-hop swagger in the post-chorus, gassing up Ms. MonĆ©t.⯠While the chorusāÆtakes the cake, EVERYTHING about āOn My Mamaā is theāÆcatās meow.āÆMonĆ©t has opted against being humble ā an understatement.⯠āTell me, is you down / āCause Iām tryna go up tonight,ā she sings in the first verse, continuing, āHoes and hoochies left and right / I just wanna live in a fantasy / I think we deserve it, right?ā WOO! Furthermore, she brags, āSex game go stupid / Snappinā like a toothpick /⦠Might be too fine to hit it from behindā Lawd Jesus! As untouchable as she is,āÆthere is no way you can deny how entertaining she sounds onāÆāOn My Mamaā. Gotta love the fierceness!āÆāÆĀ

6. Kings of Leon, āSex on Fireā
Only by the Night // RCA // 2008Ā
āYou! / Your sex is on fire / Consumed! / With whatās just transpired!ā Ooh-wee š
! It doesnāt take deep thought to interpret what Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill is singing about.Ā While it took the rock band a while, they finally managed to get wider recognition and commercial success, beginning with their 2008 double-platinum album, Only by the Night.Ā While āUse Somebodyā is the most decorated record from the LP (the bandās biggest hits), winning two Grammys, āSex on Fireā won a Grammy a year earlier for Best Rock Performance.Ā Ā
āAll the commotion
The kiddie like playĀ
It has people talkināĀ Ā
Talkinā.āĀ Ā
Woo! āSex on Fireā is good old, throwback, gritty traditional rock, driven by red-hot sex.Ā Despite peaking modestly on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 56, āSex on Fireā was certified platinum by the RIAA, which is quite an accomplishment.Ā

7. Missy Elliott, āGet Ur Freak Onā
Miss E⦠So Addictive // Elektra Entertainment Group, Inc. // 2001
āHeadbanger / Hit me /⦠Give me some new shit!ā Woo! āGet Ur Freak Onā is one of the premiere songs by four-time Grammy winner Missy Elliott. Fun fact: āGet Ur Freak Onā earned Elliott her first Grammy at the 44th Annual GRAMMY Awards for Best Rap Solo Performance. Yay! Get it, girl! Oddly, it was also nominated for Best R&B Song š„“. Go figure! It is the fifth track from her platinum-certified third studio album, Miss E⦠So Addictive. āGet Ur Freak Onā peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. It was certified multiplatinum by the RIAA in May 2023. Elliott and the one-and-only Timbaland produced this infectious rap banger (āMe and Timbaland been hot since twenty years agoā).Ā Both artists were āforward thinkersā when it came to their music.
The production bangs. āGet Ur Freak Onā sounded futuristic when released and remains ear-catching and innovative years later. The synth and percussion are on point. It samples four songs: āIs That Your Chick (The Lost Verses)ā by Memphis Bleek, āLarka 1.1ā by Zero-G and Master Dilbahar, āTomi Tablas 07ā and āClassic Tumbi Loop 03ā by Zero-G.Ā Missy Elliott brings ample attitude, energy, and personality. Her rhymes are fun and incredibly sharp. āMissy be puttinā it down, Iām the hottest āround,ā she brags in the first verse, continuing, āI told yāall motherā (Skrrt), yāall canāt stop me now / Listen to me now, Iām lastinā twenty rounds.ā Confident! āWhoās that bitch? People you know,ā she bites in the second verse, adding, āPeople, here I come, now sweat me when Iām done / We got the radio shook like we got a gun.ā Damn! The chorus is simple but utterly infectious: ā(Go) Get your freak on (go), get your freak on.ā Hell yeah! The change of pace during the third verse is cool. ā(Yes) I know you feel me now (Yes), I know you hear me loud / (Yes) I scream it loud and proud (Yes), Missy gonā blow it down.ā A new synth arrives that doesnāt change the minimalist vibe but provides a welcome contrast that keeps āGet Ur Freak Onā fresh. The ending is marvelous. āGet Ur Freak Onā is one of the best ārapā songs ever.Ā That ānew shitā is timeless!

8. Kanye West, āBlood On The Leavesā
Yeezus // Def Jam // 2013
Most critics loved Yeezus, the 2013 album by Kanye West (it scored an 84 via Metacritic). Still, it wasnāt the Grammy winnerās most successful from a commercial standpoint.Ā Nonetheless, there were some awesome moments including the thrilling, Nina Simone sampling āBlood On The Leavesā (āStrange fruit hanginā from the poplar trees / Blood on the leavesā). āBlood On The Leavesā is one of the best songs of the rapperās career.Ā Those biting, malicious synths within the production ā WOO!Ā Honest and emotional, West delivers superb rhymes. Such rhymes include a reference to a truism that money canāt buy everything.Ā Specifically, Mr. West asserts, āAnd all I want is what I canāt buy now.ā Of course, thereās also colorful references to Jay-Z and BeyoncĆ© that we couldnāt possibly omit:Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
āI donāt give a damn if you used to talk to JAY-ZĀ
He aināt with you, he with BeyoncĆ©, you need to stop actinā lazy.āĀ

9. Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald, āOn My Ownā
Winner in You // MCA // 1986Ā Ā
Patti LaBelle (1944 ā ) experienced a resurgence of sorts in 1986.Ā Sheād had plenty of success before this, with LaBelle (the iconic āLady Marmaladeā) and as a solo artist (āIf Only You Knewā).Ā Even so, āOwn My Ownā gave the R&B veteran a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. This gorgeous, lush duet between two awesome, distinct, and powerful voices ā Michael McDonald (1952 ā ) is the man ā Ā propelled her album, Winner in You, to number one on the Billboard 200, and her only platinum-certified album.Ā Ā Notably, āOn My Ownā was certified gold.
Not only does āOn My Ownā feature two legendary musicians, but itās also written and produced by a legendary team: Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager.Ā The form features standard sections (verses, chorus, bridge), but isnāt written āpredictablyā either.Ā LaBelle sings the first verse, singing incredibly expressively while also showing tremendous control. She follows with an abbreviation of the chorus, essentially. As for McDonald, he matches her in the second verse, also singing with great expression, followed by the full-fledged chorus: āOn my own / Once again, now / One more time / By myself.āĀ They then sing collaboratively on the bridge, followed by a Patti chorus, another McDonald verse, and the most powerful chorus yet, performed jointly.Ā LaBelle and McDonald let loose in that extended closing chorus, and we wouldnāt have it any other way!Ā

10. Adele, āEasy On Meā āÆ
30 // Melted Stone / Columbia // 2021Ā
āI know there is hope in these waters / But I canāt bring myself to swim / When I am drowning in this silence / Baby, let me in.ā Woo ā that hits deep! Adele returned formidably on āEasy on Meā, a personal promo single from her superb fourth studio album, 30. The Grammy winnerās voice is the biggest selling point of āEasy on Me,ā which she wrote with Greg Kurstin. Kurstin, a mastermind when it comes to the boards, does work on the production end of things too.Ā That said, āEasy on Meā is primarily a piano ballad, though we add a robust bass line and some light drum programming (nothing too crazy).Ā With soaring vocals, sound production, and a tuneful melody, the last box to be checked off is songwriting.Ā āEasy on Meā is the perfect song that allows Adele to get personal.Ā Divorce seems to be the primary culprit of the singerās petition for āease,ā though she also asserts, āI was still a child / I didnāt get the chance to / Feel the world around me.ā That seems to open the door to a variety of things that have affected her in her life.Ā Adele = sheer brilliance!Ā She won her 16th career Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance for āEasy On Meā at the 65th Annual GRAMMY Awards.

11. The Floaters, āFloat Onā
The FloatersĀ // UMG Recordings, Inc. // 1977
āFloat, float on.ā Word. Those are the key lyrics from the simple but memorable chorus of āFloat Onā. āFloat Onā was the sole pop hit by the Detroit R&B group, The Floaters (James Mitchell Jr., Larry Cunningham, Charles Clark, Paul Mitchell, and Ralph Mitchell). āFloat Onā peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was certified gold by the RIAA. The single version of the top R&B song of 1977 runs four and a quarter minutes long, while the album version runs nearly 12 minutes.Ā āFloat Onā commences the groupās 1977, platinum-certified album, The Floaters.Ā Arnold Ingram, James Mitchell Jr., and Marvin Willis wrote āFloat On.ā Woody Wilson produced it.
āAquarius, Libra, Leo, Cancer / Ralph, Charles, Paul, Larry.ā Ā Those are the astrological signs of The Floaters in the order they perform on āFloat On.ā āFloat Onā stands out for many reasons.Ā Backed by a lush, soulful music backdrop (rhythm section, strings), the music floats along fittingly. Spoken word performances by Ralph, Charles, Paul (1949 ā 2021), and Larry (1951 ā 2019) ride the glistening musical backdrop like a champ. Each member introduces their sign, themselves, and their preference in a woman.Ā āAquarius and my name is Ralph,ā Ralph Mitchell speaks, adding, āNow I like a woman who loves her freedom / And I like a woman who can hold her own.ā Larry is the final voice heard in the fourth verse:
āCancer and my name is Larry, huh
And I like a woman that loves everything and everybody
Because I love everybody and everything
And you know what, ladies, if you feel that this is you
Then this is what I want you to do.ā
The sung vocals ā the pre-chorus and chorus ā are marvelous, too. Charles Clark shines in his pre-chorus, spoiling listeners with a ripe falsetto.Ā āFloat Onā was the only hit by The Floaters, but itās a good one ā one for āall time!ā

12. Alicia Keys, āGirl On Fireā
Girl on Fire // RCA // 2012Ā Ā
āSheās just a girl and sheās on fire š„,ā Grammy-winning R&B singer/songwriter Alicia Keys asserts on āGirl On Fireā. āGirl On Fireā marks the crowning achievement from her platinum-certified 2012 LP, Girl on Fire. Even though the girl whom Keys sings about has the adversity of a crazy world against her, āShe knows she can fly away.ā Why? Well, because āSheās not backinā downā and, of course, āThis girl is on fire!ā āGirl On Fireā just missed the top 10, peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Ā In the Inferno version, Nicki Minaj assists, performing the first and fourth verses (āDear God, if youāre here God / Make the fire disappear when they stare Godā).āÆRegardless of the mix, Keys is the star of the show.⯠She sings well, painting a beautiful portrait of a strong, determined woman šŖ.⯠The bridge marks a truly fabulous moment, where Keys makes it clear that this girl doesnāt show her flaws or insecurities in the least.āÆāÆĀ āÆĀ
āEverybody stands, as she goes byāÆĀ
āCause they can see the flame thatās in her eyesāÆĀ
Watch her when sheās lighting up the nightāÆāÆĀ
Nobody knows that sheās a lonely girlāÆĀ
And itās a lonely worldāÆĀ
But she gonā let it burn, baby, burn, baby.āāÆ
The multiplatinum single speaks to women ā empowerment, baby ā but it should also be admired by men, too.⯠A strong woman deserves the admiration and respect of all šŖ!āÆ

13. a-ha, āTake On Meā
Hunting High and Low // Warner // 1985
āTodayās another day to find you / Shying away / Iāll be cominā for your love, okay?ā OKAY! Norwegian synthpop trio, a-ha (Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmen, and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy), charted on the Billboard Hot 100 thrice.Ā Their most successful charting song is āTake on Meā which commences their 1985, platinum-certified album, Hunting High and Low.Ā āTake on Meā didnāt only chart, it reached number one.Ā While the song itself wasnāt nominated, a-ha received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.Ā You can bet the collectiveās sole top 10 hit is a big reason why they received a nomination.
So, what makes āTake on Meā such a big deal ā a 1980s banger? The instrumental plays a sizable role.Ā Itās that scintillating groove, guitar, and those bright, iconic keyboard/synth lines.Ā Unsurprisingly, due to the prolific nature of those synths, āTake on Meā has been sampled numerous times. Such an inviting record! The instrumental ear candy, hence, is decadent.Ā Of course, catchy lyrics, tuneful melodies, and a memorable vocal performance (Harket) also give āTake on Meā the edge. His upper register is insane! āSo, needless to say / Iām odds and ends / But Iāll be stumbling away,ā Harket sings in second verse, continuing, āSlowly learninā that life is okay / Say after me / āItās no better to be safe than sorry.āā Of course, the centerpiece ā the main attraction ā is the chorus: āTake on me (Take on me) /⦠Iāll be gone / In a day or two.ā Even approaching four decades after its release, āTake on Meā remains utterly fresh!

14. Erykah Badu, āOn & Onā
Baduizm // Universal // 1997āÆĀ
āOh my, my, my, Iām feeling high / My moneyās gone, Iām all alone / Too much to see / The world keeps turning.ā Ah, in 1997, the unique, one-of-a-kind Erykah Badu delivered one of neo-soulās most important albums with her debut, Baduizm.Ā Furthermore, Baduizm marks of the best albums of the 1990s. Nothing shines brighter on Baduizm than the cool, calm, but energetic āOn & On,ā in which Badu channels her inner Billie Holiday, incorporating jazz into her brand of scintillating neo-soul.Ā The sound of the record was ear-catching and truly refreshing at the time.Ā Approaching 30 years later, it remains ear-catching and refreshing.Ā Beyond the backdrop and distinct, refined vocals of Badu, who deservingly won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal performance, the songwriting is brilliant, thought-provoking.Ā āOn & Onā thrives off its intellectualism and social consciousness. In the first verse, she sings, āIf we were made in his image, then call us by our names / Most intellects do not believe in God but they fear us the same.ā Who exactly do they fear on this number 12 Billboard Hot 100 hit? Us refers to black people, which fits this black-centric, Five-Percent Nation referencing gem.Ā The centerpiece, of course, is the chorus:Ā Ā
āOh, on and on, and on and onĀ
My cypher keeps moving like a rolling stoneĀ
Oh, on and on, and on and onĀ
All night ātil the break of dawn.āāÆĀ Ā

15. Sam & Dave, āHold On, Iām Comināā
Hold On, Iām Cominā // Atlantic // 1966
āDonāt you ever be sad / Lean on me when times are bad.ā Amen! Many soul musicians came out of the church. Gospel, a spirited, soulful style of music, is filled with authenticity, grit, and nuance ā youāre singing about God and salvation, after all.Ā Soul singers bring that same intensity sans singing about the goodness of the Lord. Sam & Dave ā Sam Moore (1935 ā 2025) and Dave Prater (1937 ā 1988) ā were responsible for recording āHold On, Iām Comināā, among the most iconic, instantly recognizable songs from the soul catalog.Ā Bluesy to the nth degree, it was a heavy hitter from the 1960s. āHold Onā is the opening track from Hold On, Iām Cominā, released in 1966. David Porter and Isaac Hayes penned it.Ā A success on the pop charts, it peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100.Ā Ā
āHold On, Iām Comināā thrives thanks to its musicianship. Beginning with the instrumental, the rhythm section is tight.Ā The drum groove is irresistible.Ā The bass line is fat.Ā The piano playing is bluesy.Ā Beyond the rhythm section, the articulated, biting horns are electrifying and hard-hitting.Ā Of course, the stars of the show are Sam & Dave, who serve up dynamic, gritty vocals.Ā The chemistry between the duo is marvelous. Moore continues singing in the first verse, āWhen the day comes and you are down / In a river of trouble and about to drownā¦ā Prater, in the second verse, asserts, āDonāt have to worry, ācause Iām here / No need to suffer, baby, ācause Iām near.ā What should she do? In their best moment, the crĆØme de la crĆØme, the chorus, they sing, āJust hold on, Iām cominā / Hold on, Iām cominā.ā Word. āHold On, Iām Comināā is timeless.
