1. Lauv, âBecause Of Youâ
âBecause Of Youâ // Lauv / AWAL Recordings America, Inc. // 2024
âDriving fast in the lane / Of the cold remains of L.A.â Los Angeles always gets a âbad rap,â doesnât it? Lauv (Ari Leff) adds to it in his brief but entertaining single, âBecause Of Youâ. He continues singing in the first verse, âWinter comes, winter goes / But it all just stays the same.â Is it because of L.A. or someone in L.A.? Itâs the latter. Leff and Michael Pollack penned the song. Leff and Federico Vindver produced. Thereâs a lot to âsink your teethâ into in âBecause Of You.â The sound of âBecause Of Youâ is a huge selling point. The song is a vibe from the beginning. The instrumental is bright and spirited. Specifically, the strings (programming) are sublime. Another musical touch that shines is the harmonic progression, specifically in the pre-chorus (âDonât you say that you want me back, babyâŠâ). Matching the spirit of the accompaniment are sweet vocals. He pours his heart out: âItâs not celebration, itâs just a big occasion / From the man who loved you at all.â The section to beat is the chorus:
âBecause of you, babe
Oh-ooh, oh-ooh, oh-ooh
Because of you, babe
Oh-ooh, oh-ooh, oh-ooh.â
âBecause Of Youâ gives our handsome, talented pop singer/songwriter/producer another worthwhile addition to his collection.

2. Halle, âBecause I Love Youâ
âBecause I Love Youâ // Parkwood Entertainment LLC / Columbia // 2024Â
After that âkinder, gentlerâ chorus, âBecause I Love Youâ grows more assertive in sound. Halle is never âover aggressive,â but she does bring attitude. See the end of the first verse, which drops another f-bomb: âYou ainât used to girls that can make it high fashion / Fuckinâ with a ten, amen.â Word! The love is still pronounced in the second verse sans profanity: âYou put me in the car, and you always put me first / Even when Iâm the worst, even when I make it hurt.â Great background vocals enhance the color. Notably, Grammy-nominated English musician RAYE packs a mean punch on the outro (âLove you, babe / Love you, babe / Love you, babe / Itâs all because, all becauseâ). âBecause I Love Youâ is fantastic!

3. Obscurest Vinyl, âIâd Really Like To Get In Your Pants, Because I Just Shit Mineâ
âIâd Really Like To Get In Your Pants, Because I Just Shit Mineâ // Hallwood Distribution // 2024Â
Obscurest Vinyl is responsible for releasing âthe greatest records youâve never heard.â Among those records is an âobscureâ one from the risquĂ© jazz crooner Vito Lovejoy. Youâre not alone if youâve never heard of him until he unleashed the âcharmingâ song, âIâd Really Like To Get In Your Pants, Because I Just Shit Mineâ. The title not only contains innuendo, but also fecal matter â shit! Before Lovejoy gets âdown and dirty,â the listeners are privy to a refined instrumental intro. Beyond the old-school, big band backdrop, âIâd Really Like To Get In Your Pants, Because I Just Shit Mineâ isnât refined in the least. I mean, the title is on-the-nose to the nth degree.
Vito Lovejoy is brutally honest about his shitting problem. âI just canât stop ruining all of these pants / Iâm just shittinâ and shittinâ and shittinâ.â Damn, thatâs ample shit, bruh! Irritated regarding his irritable bowels, Lovejoy adds an intensifier to the shit: âTrying to get in your pants / Because I keep fuckinâ shittinâ in mine.â What more can you say but, holy fuckinâ shit! âIâd Really Like To Get In Your Pants, Because I Just Shit Mineâ is all about shock value. Although itâs brief, running north of a minute, Vito Lovejoy and Obscurest Vinyl get their point across loud and clear. And that point involves lots of shit! In all seriousness, this âunrealâ record should be taken with a grain of salt. Itâs all for the sake of entertainment and thoroughly gets the job done.

4. Sabrina Carpenter, âbecause I liked a boyâ Â
emails I canât send fwd: // Island // 2023Â
Ah, the love triangle â always an intriguing thing to watch unfold. Disney had a juicy love triangle play out for the ages between Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, and Sabrina Carpenter, which The Daily Beast expounds upon. The drama involving these three has been nothing short of a hot mess. Bassett has received plenty of heat, but as Carpenter suggests on âbecause I liked a boyâ from her 2022 album, emails I canât send, sheâs received the ire of fans. In the chorus, she bluntly sings, âNow Iâm a homewrecker, Iâm a slut / I got death threats fillinâ up semitrucks / Tellme who I am, guess I donât have a choice / All because I likedâŠâ Wow đŻ â well, that sort of sums it up, doesnât it? Â
Besides the chorus, Carpenter cites other instances of the ramifications of her relationship with Joshua Bassett. âWho knew cuddling on trampolines could be so reckless?â Indeed! Far more tied into the triangle are the lyrics, âWas only tryna hold you close while your heart was failing.â Bassett experienced heart failure, seemingly a result of all this mess, which he has sung about in his song, âLife Lineâ. Essentially, Carpenter was trying to be supportive, yet, again, the backlash has been horrific. One thing is for sure, on âbecause I liked a boyâ, Carpenter has learned a valuable life lesson: âDating boys with exes / No, I wouldnât recommend it.â At least Sabrina delivers a colorful pop bop out of this shit, written alongside John Ryan (who also produces), Julia Michaels, and JP Saxe.  Â

5. Ne-Yo, âBecause of Youâ
Because of You // The Island Def Jam Group //2007
âAnd I know this much is true / Baby, you have become my addiction / Iâm so strung out on you / I can barely move, but I like it.â Oh my! Ne-Yo (Shaffer Smith) has had an incredibly successful run in R&B. The singer/songwriterâs most successful period of his career was undoubtedly in the mid-late aughts, where he released hit after hit.⯠Smith won three Grammys, including a win for Best Contemporary R&B Album for Because Of You. The platinum-certified album debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard 200. âBecause of You,â the opening track and single, was a big pop hit, peaking at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. âBecause of Youâ shined because of the chill and cool potent vocals by Ne-Yo, memorable songwriting (Smith, Tor Erik Hermansen, and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen), tuneful melodies, particularly in the chorus, and sweet production work (StarGate â Hermansen and Eriksen).⯠Thereâs no extensive analysis necessary as âBecause of Youâ speaks for itself. Matters of the heart dominate the script. Ne-Yo is addicted â he canât get enough or stop thinking of her: âAnd itâs all because of you /⊠Never get enough / Sheâs the sweetest drug.â Not only was he addicted to her, we â the listeners â were addicted to this song. Even 16 years later, âBecause of Youâ is truly a fierce pop record. Fabulous singing, cool harmonic scheme (specifically the bridge), and a sophisticated, well-rounded âpop & Bâ styled R&B record.âŻâŻÂ

6. Patti Smith Group, âBecause the Nightâ
Easter // Arista // 1978Â
âLove is an angel disguised as lust / Here in our bed until the morning comes.â Ooh-wee! Patti Smith, âthe high priestess of punk-poetry,â was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.  That is a big deal. Surprisingly, by pop standards, Smith has one hit to her name. That one hit wonder, âBecause the Nightâ, is attributed to the Patti Smith Group. It is the third track from the groupâs 1978 album, Easter.  âNightâ peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Notably, Smith penned the song with a fellow rock legend, Bruce Springsteen. Springsteen had begun writing it initially. Smith finished the song. Jimmy Iovine is responsible for getting Springsteen to give Smith the song. He also produced it.Â
âBecause the Nightâ commences with piano accompaniment. Smith sings quietly and reservedly initially. âTake me now, baby, here as I am / Pull me close, try and understand,â she sings in the first verse, continuing, âDesire is hunger, itâs the fire I breathe / Love is a banquet on which we feed.â Soon, âBecause of Youâ becomes bigger, and Smith belts. It features dramatic, hard-rocking musical accompaniment. The punk energy is prevalent in this non-punk-rock song.  I love the heaviness of the sound of the drums. Later, there is also an electrifying electric guitar solo. Rock on! The melodies are tuneful, while the overall songwriting instrumentally and lyrically are strong. The chorus is the section to beat:
âBecause the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us.â
Great contrast is provided in the bridge. The songwriting continues to be âon pointâ as Smith asserts, âWith love we sleep / With doubt the vicious circle turns and burns / Without you, I cannot live.â Smith may have only notched one hit, but âBecause the Nightâ is a rad one.  Patti Smith ate this track up đ€!Â

7. Afroman, âBecause I Got Highâ
The Good Times // Republic // 2001
ââCause I got high / Because I got high / Because I got high / (La-da-da da da da-da-da-da).â Afroman (Joseph Foreman) earned brief success. His main claim to fame was his song, âBecause I Got Highâ, which appeared on his 2001 gold-certified album, The Good Times. âBecause I Got Highâ cemented its place in 2000s hip-hop/rap history. It peaked at no. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, was certified platinum, and earned a Grammy nomination (Best Rap Solo Performance).
âBecause I Got Highâ is self-explanatory â no deep analysis is necessary. Because Afroman spends far too much time getting high (on weed), frankly, he does lots of dumb shit. Itâs not so bad early on though: âI was gonna clean my room until I got high /⊠I was gonna get up and find the broom, but then I got high.â Not cleaning a room? Forgivable. His academics are affected by his weed intake, which is less than stellar, hence why heâs âTaking it [the class] next semesterâ because he flunked. Where things get hairier on this infectious, melodic rap cut is Afroman shirking bigger responsibilities. Not going to court and paying his child support â DEAD BEAT DAD! Running from the cops instead of pulling over like he should, and because he was high, he ends up paraplegic⊠Process that one. Among the funniest and lewdest happenings in âBecause I Got Highâ occur in the seventh verse:
âI was gonna make love to you (Oh!) but then I got high
⊠I was gonna eat yo pussy too, but then I got high
Now Iâm jacking off and I know why
âCause I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high.â
Damn, Afroman! At least heâs transparent when he asserts, âI messed up my entire life because I got high.â His mistakes are troubling but sweet music to our ears on the unforgettable âBecause I Got Highâ, a stoner anthem for the ages!

8. Kelly Clarkson, âBecause of Youâ Â
Breakaway // 19 Recordings Ltd. //  2004âŻâŻÂ âŻâŻÂ
âI lose my wayâŻâŻÂ
And itâs not too long before you point it outâŻâŻÂ
I cannot cryâŻâŻÂ
Because I know thatâs weakness in your eyesâŻâŻÂ
Iâm forced to fake a smile, a laugh, every day of my lifeâŻâŻÂ
My heart canât possibly breakâŻâŻÂ

Heavy but powerful.⯠While no one doubted Clarksonâs ability to sing after winning American Idol, they didnât have faith in her was a songwriter.⯠Clarkson had to fight to get âBecause of Youâ on an album.⯠It didnât make the cut on her debut, Thankful, but remaining persistent, she secured the cut, which she refined with Ben Moody and David Hodges on Breakaway.⯠It was top 10 hit and a worldwide success.âŻâŻâŻâŻÂ

9. Deniece Williams, âCause You Love Me BabyâÂ
This Is NiecyâŻ// Columbia // 1976 Â
âThereâs nothinâ better that I like to do / Than sitting here cuddle up next to you / âCause you love me, baby / Just the way I want to be loved.â Aww, thatâs so romantic, Deniece Williams!⯠Williams is one of my personal favorite soul musicians, period.⯠She possesses the voice of an angel.⯠Her range, technical skills, and her ability to be commanding without over-singing is incredibly impressive. âCause You Love Me Babyâ marks another stellar song from her catalog, appearing as the fourth track on her 1976, gold certified album,⯠This Is Niecy.⯠Of course, if you are familiar with This Is Niecy, youâll know the biggest hit is the song that follows in the track list, âFreeâ.⯠Even if âCause You Love Me Babyâ peaked modestly at no. 74 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, it still has ample Niecy magic.âŻâŻPart of the magic of âCause You Love Me Babyâ is the classy, colorful, and soulful production.⯠This backdrop is comprised of lovely keys, guitar, and winds. The sound is idiomatic of the 1970s brand of R&B/soul.⯠Furthermore, the melody is tuneful throughout. Of course, it is the talented Deniece Williams who brings that melody to life.⯠Her vocals are incredibly nuanced and smooth. Even as she ascends into her potent upper register, she does so with ease, barely breaking a sweat.⯠Furthermore, sheâs supported by superb backing vocals, complementing the soulfulness of her pipes and the record itself.⯠The big takeaway: ââCause you love me, baby / Just the way I want to be loved.â PERIOD!âŻ

10. Jerry Butler, âJust Because I Really Love Youâ
The Ice Man Cometh // UMG Recordings, Inc. // 1968
âOh, little girl, I donât think you mean / To hurt me the way you do,â Butler sings, adding, âSo, I let you take a whole lot of liberties / A man in love should never do.â Word. He questions his decision to give her free reign, singing, âTell me, isnât a beautiful illusion / Holding a man in the palm of your little hand?â Food for thought. The lyrics are memorable throughout, brought to life masterfully by Butler. He gives his all from a vocal perspective. There is no shortage of authenticity and personality from the legendary musician. His ad-libs towards the end of the song are among his best, showing just how much he loves this woman. A non-single from The Ice Man Cometh, that doesnât hold âJust Because I Really Love Youâ back from being the crĂšme de la crĂšme of the Jerry Butler catalog.

11. CĂ©line Dion, âBecause You Loved Me (Theme from âUp Close and Personalâ)â
Falling Into You // Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc. // 1996
In 1996, Grammy-winning pop superstar CĂ©line Dion released one of the biggest songs of her career,  âBecause You Loved Me (Theme from âUp Close and Personalâ)â. âBecause You Loved Meâ is the second track from her 1996 diamond-certified album, Falling Into You. It was written by master songwriter Diane Warren. David Foster produced it. âBecauseâ  was nominated for four Grammys at the 39th Annual Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television. Warren won her sole career Grammy (!) for the Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television. âBecause You Loved Meâ spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It was certified double platinum by the RIAA. Â
So, what makes âBecause You Loved Me (Theme from âUp Close and Personalâ)â so epic? First and foremost, it is the beautiful vocals of CĂ©line Dion. Dion gives an authentic, honest, and sincere vocal performance. She hits some impressive notes and slaughters (positively) the vocal runs.
âFor all the love I found in you
Iâll be forever thankful, baby
Youâre the one who held me up
Never let me fall
Youâre the one who saw me through, through it all.â â (verse one)Â
Dion gets awesome support courtesy of multiple background vocalists. The melodies she brings to life are gorgeous. Sheâs backed by warm, adult contemporary production. The backdrop is not particularly innovative, but it is characteristic of the late 1990s sound. A tuneful, uplifting chorus is the centerpiece where Dionâs bread is buttered.
âYou were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldnât speak
You were my eyes when I couldnât see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldnât reach
You gave me faith âcause you believed
Iâm everything I am
Because you loved me
Ooh, baby.â
Beyond the chorus, there is great musical contrast provided during the bridge section. It separates itself from the verses and chorus. The theme of love remains the same (âThrough the lies, you were the truth / My world is a better place because of youâ).  Ultimately, âBecause You Loved Me (Theme from âUp Close and Personalâ)â is among the crĂšme de la crĂšme of the CĂ©line Dion catalog.

12. Lenny Williams, ââCause I Love Youâ
Spark Of Love // UMG Recordings, Inc. // 1978Â
âGirl, you know I, I, I, I love you / No matter what you do / And I hope you understand me / Every word / I say is true / âCause I Love You.â One of the most heartfelt and dramatic songs from the soul catalog comes courtesy of Lenny Williams (1945 â ). Â ââCause I Love Youâ is the fifth track from his 1978 album, Spark Of Love. Williams penned ââCause I Love Youâ with Michael Bennett. Set in a lilting compound duple meter, ââCause I Love Youâ is a lengthy number that runs north of seven minutes. It is worth every second of its duration.
ââCause I Love Youâ is EVERYTHING! The record thrives off lush, soulful production and sublime orchestration. The strings are particularly gorgeous.  Lenny Williams delivers expressive and nuanced vocals that ooze with soul. He shows his velvety middle register, as well as a stellar falsetto. The personality and drama that Williams brings to this performance sounds authentic and utterly sincere: âSome men needs lots of women / For their passions to fill / But I / Want only you, girl /⊠If itâs in /Godâs will.â Much like Williamsâ vocals, the musical accompaniment has its fair share of dramatic moments. Williams gets support from background vocals. There is a spoken word section where Lenny continues to be vulnerable regarding love.
âBut I found myself waking up a few hours later
And the tears were running down my face And my friend told me
He said, âLenny, you just oughta forget about her.â
But I told my friend, I said
âYou know, maybe youâve never been in love like Iâve been in love
And maybe youâve never felt the things that Iâve felt.ââ
At around the 4:45 mark, Williams begins picking up the singing, continuing his heartfelt, dramatic performance, supported by background vocals and silky smooth musical accompaniment. Matters of the heart drive this extraordinary ballad. The excellence of ââCause I Love Youâ speaks for itself. Williamsâ gem is a popular source for sampling.

13. Vicki Yohe, âBecause Of Who You Areâ
I Just Want You // Pure Springs // 2003
The A section of the record is marvelous in its own right. Just as moving if not more so is the One of the B section of the record, where Munizzi highlights different names given to God. During this section, Vicki Yohe truly ups the ante spiritually, digging in more. âJehovah Jireh, my Provider / Jehovah Nissi, Lord You reign in victory,â she sings, continuing, âJehovah Shalom, My Prince of Peace / And I worship you because of who You are.â This section truly speaks to how great, how powerful, and how Omniscient God is, with those specific names hailing from the Bible. By the end, Yohe modulates, riffing over the tuneful melody, and further accentuating the spirit built throughout the song. All told, âBecause Of Who You Areâ is a simple but truly awesome song that gives all honor and glory to G-O-D đ đ đ !!!
